Apple reveals the changes coming with iOS 11.3, ARKit and Animoji to receive big updates
has revealed details of the upcoming iOS 11.3 update, that will roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the spring. The update brings with it four new Animoji to use with the iPhone X, enhanced capabilities for ARKit and the battery update that was promised just the other week.
is a feature exclusive to the iPhone X, as it uses the premium iPhone's front-facing TrueDepth camera to turn your face into an animated animal, that mimics your head and mouth movements. With iOS 11.3, Apple is adding a lion, a bear, a skull and a dragon to the mix to use to send within messages to friends.
The biggest update to ARKit with iOS 11.3 will be ARKit 1.5 for developers. It adds the ability for the iPhone and iPad to recognise vertical surfaces. Currently, you can only view augmented reality applications and games on horizontal surfaces, such as tables and chairs. By being able to recognise vertical surfaces, Apple envisages ARKit being used in places such as museums, where an app could recognise a painting on a wall and bring it to life with added information, or it could overlay an interactive exhibit. Apple adds that the improved ARKit will be able to better recognise irregular shaped surfaces, such as circular tables.
As Apple , iOS 11.3 will add a new battery feature that will let iPhone 6 owners and later view the health status of their phone's battery. This is in response to the discovery that Apple deliberately of older batteries, to help the iPhone run at its best. The new feature will also let iPhone owners know if their battery needs servicing and gives them the ability to turn off the power management feature. Apple of course recommends leaving it turned on.
Other new features of iOS 11.3 will include Business Chat, which lets iPhone owners live chat with participating business through the Messages app. Supporting business already include Wells Fargo, Lowe's, Discover and Hilton and through these, you can schedule appointments or buy products using Apple Pay.
The iOS 11.3 update is available for developers now and will be available in beta form for anyone who wants to get the features early at a slightly later date. It will then be available to download as a free update in the spring. The following Apple products will be compatible with the update:
- iPhone 5s and later
- All iPad Air models
- All iPad Pro models
- iPad 5th generation
- iPad Mini 2 and later
- iPod Touch 6th generation
